RILEY TO OFFER FRIENDSHIP SLOOP MODEL

Coastal Fishing Boat Became a Classic Cruising Sailboat

Riley Marine Models announces the latest addition to its line of half-hull models with the release of the Friendship sloop, a cruising type popular on the coast of Maine and elsewhere.

Friendship sloops originated in the coastal town of Friendship, Maine in the late nineteenth century. Originally used for fishing and lobstering, the gaff-rigged sailboats were later adopted by cruising sailors for their seakindly ways and superb good looks. Friendship sloops range from about 21′ to 50′ in length, and are still being built in both wood and fiberglass. The one shown in the photo is Bay Lady of Boothbay Harbor, Maine.

Riley’s laminated-wood half-hull model measures 13″ long, and is mounted on a 16″-long mahogany backboard. The hull itself is available with a gloss natural finish, or painted in custom colors by special order.

RILEY MARINE MODELS EXPANDS

Opens New Shop to Accommodate Rapid Business Growth

Riley Marine Models will move into a larger manufacturing facility in April, 2010. The move into a brand new 2,300-square-foot building represents the second expansion in just three years for the rapidly-growing builder of half-hull models of historic boats and ships.

The new shop is located in the Boothbay Industrial Park, home to many other marine-related businesses in the historic coastal town of Boothbay, Maine. The move provides additional space for design and manufacturing processes and wood storage. It will enable Riley Marine Models to build larger models and to stock a wider variety of wood species.

“Some of the trees that we cleared from the building site will be used in our models,” said company president Ed Riley. “We’ve milled up some nice white oak, and these will make lovely half-hulls for display.”

The company’s contact information will not change. It is still at PO Box 86, Boothbay Harbor, ME, 04538. Phone: 207-415-7661. Email: info@rileymarinemodels.com
