Riley Marine Models, of Boothbay, Maine, was founded by Ed Riley, B.S., M.S., Engineering, M.I.T. He had his first sailboat by age 11 and designed and built his first boat at 15. After a career in the aerospace and the medical products industries, he wanted to share his love and admiration of the classic designs of well-built traditional New England watercraft. Over his lifetime, Ed has owned 14 boats so far and currently sails a Herreshoff 12 1/2. The photo of the boat shown on the Herreshoff model page is Ed’s boat, Frog, at home on her mooring in Boothbay harbor.
The making of a traditional Half Hull model, as a part of boat design, has become a forgotten artifact of the early boatbuilding process. Many builder’s records, plans and models were lost when the business closed. In many cases, only a photo or painting of the watercraft exists, requiring a significant effort to faithfully recreate the Half Hull model today. We try to start with the most accurate design source available. In some cases, this means going to the owner of the vessel to get plans or permission to take measurements directly from the hull.
Ed personally selects the wood and other materials used in each Riley Half Hull Model for quality and color. Most of the models are hand finished with a clear varnish to enhance the natural beauty of the wood. We continue to add more classic New England boat models to the Riley collection. Please let us know if you would like to be kept up to date on new additions.
The models shown on our Model pages, unless otherwise noted, are currently in stock and available for quick shipment. We can custom craft models up to approximately 45 inches long.
