Adventure was designed by Thomas McManus and built by John F. James and Son of Essex, Massachusetts in 1926. The ship, one of the last and best of the Gloucester, Massachusetts’ famous Grand Banks fishing schooners, served in the Gloucester fishing fleet until the early 50’s. Adventure was purchased in 1965 by Captain Jim Sharp and sailed in the Camden, Maine windjammer fleet for 23 years. While in Camden, she earned her nickname “Queen of the Schooners” for her grace and sailing prowess. In 1988, Capt. Sharp gave Adventure to the city of Gloucester for restoration and preservation. Adventure is now a prominent destination site on the Essex National Heritage Area Maritime Trail, is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is also a National Historic Landmark.
