A one-design class of Knockabouts originally designed by B. B. Crowninshield in 1908 for the Manchester Yacht Club in Massachusetts and called the MANCHESTER 17. It was built by Rice Bros., East Boothbay, Maine in 1908 and 1913. As it’s popularity spread it aquired a number of different names including BAR HARBOR 17. Considered a daysailer, racer and coastal cruiser, this class was to become one of the most popular and long-lived of the Knockabouts due to its sleek design and still renowned racing ability. The most common name for the design is now the Dark Harbor 17, named after the summer colony in Islesboro, Maine.
